Coal India’s $3B Green Energy Shift: 4.5 GW Solar and Wind Projects to Power Green Ammonia Plants

Coal India Ltd. is making a major move toward clean energy with an investment of ₹250 billion (~$3 billion) to deploy 4.5 GW of renewable energy, primarily from solar and wind. This shift is part of the company’s broader strategy to help India meet its ambitious green energy targets while supporting industrial growth.

The renewable energy generated will predominantly supply power to AM Green Ammonia’s 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) green ammonia production plants. These facilities will rely on Coal India’s clean energy as part of a long-term agreement outlined in a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties. The MoU signifies a strategic partnership aimed at providing reliable green power for AM Green’s projects, including integration with pumped hydro storage to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of energy.

“With our 4.5 GW renewable energy initiative, powered by solar and wind, and AM Green’s integration of pumped hydro storage, this project will ensure a steady supply of green energy,” said Coal India in a statement, emphasizing the importance of the project for India’s clean energy transition.

The investment aligns with India’s broader green energy goals, contributing to the target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. While Coal India continues to expand its coal-fired power capacity—aiming for an additional 80 GW by 2031–32—the move toward clean energy also reflects the nation’s dual approach to meeting the growing power demand while mitigating climate change.

The clean energy projects also highlight the ongoing challenges facing India’s renewable sector, from land acquisition to fluctuating demand for tenders. However, this strategic investment underlines Coal India’s commitment to balancing industrial growth with sustainability and supporting India’s long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2070.
